Just Some Thoughts for Red, White, and Blue

For three months in a row, I've been thinking red, white, and blue.

May - Memorial Day, when we honor servicemen and women who have given their lives in fighting to preserve the freedoms we enjoy and/or to help secure or protect freedom for others in the world.

June - the 14th is Flag Day. Can't you just picture Betsy Ross, sitting in that rocking chair, wearing her white bonnet, with needle and thread in hand, sewing the first American Flag?

July - the Fourth of July is when we celebrate our independence as a country. Once ruled by England, we became the United States of America on July 4, 1776. What a blessing that we now consider England our staunchest friend and ally.

All of these days are about freedom in one sense or another. We are thankful for the freedoms we enjoy - freedom to talk with one another, freedom to meet, freedom to attend (or not) the church of our choice, freedom to share the news through the press, freedom to select those who will govern our country, freedom to bear arms, and more. I am thankful to live in the United States where I could choose to study what I wanted and become a teacher, where I can now use other talents and abilities with which I have been blessed, to crochet, where I could become the mother of three children (or more if that had been my choice), where I can worship according to my beliefs, where I have a home on two acres of land, and can watch the deer (who ate my hostas, by the way), the wild turkeys with their little ones, birds, squirrels, rabbits, a coyote once in awhile, a fox family, the hummingbirds at the feeders. It would take much too long to list everything I associate with freedom.

But, in thinking about red, white, and blue, I often think of my friends and team members on the Boomers and Beyond Etsy Street Team (Bbest team) who represent several different countries throughout the world. I think of the varied talents, the creativity, and the friendships forged through our common desires to create and share what we make with the world. Pink Day! Really? Yes!

It appears that there is a special day for almost everything! In June we find days celebrating the egg, donuts, cheese, yo-yos, weed your garden day, chocolate ice cream day, and Father's Day, of course. Then there are whole weeks set aside for clay and fishing. And, June is Fruit and Vegetables month and Adopt a Cat month. I often wonder who decides what we are celebrating on any given day, week, or month. Is there a place where one can make suggestions? When searching today, I found that June 23 is Pink Day. That makes me want to look to see if all the other colors have their own special day! But, pink is pleasing to the palette, and I've discovered many pink creations among the members of the Boomers and Beyond Etsy Street Team - the BBest Team. Ahhhhh……..Treasuries

I was bummed! Sally was snowed in and couldn’t get out of her driveway. Thankfully, the electricity hadn’t gone off when the big snow hit, and there was still Instant Messaging. I was sitting there virtually chatting with Sally, when I said to myself, “Hmmm. Think I’ll check out the Etsy treasury and see how close it is to opening up.” Wrote to Sally, “Be back in a few!”

The list totaled 344 with about an hour to go. “Should be able to create a treasury in that time,” I thought. So, off I went to look for a theme………..black sounded nice! (And it is never a problem to find marvelous, gorgeous, beautiful, fabulous creations when one looks for items created by members of the Boomers and Beyond Team.) Thank goodness for the Poster Sketch Tool that lets one move photos around to arrange them just so!

Back to the IM. I wrote, “Oh, Sally, just wait till you see this treasury of Bbest creations! Now, the only trick is being there when the window opens. Be right back.” “No problem,” Sally replied.

Down to 15 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes. Decided I’d better just wait right there. Wallah! The box opened, and off I went entering the listing numbers in the small boxes and watching the photos magically appear. About half way through, the numbers weren’t going into the boxes! Seemed frozen. My guess was the Etsy servers were simply overloaded with treasury makers! After a few minutes, I was able to finish it.

Back to the IM. “Sally, it’s finished. Here is the listing number so you can go check it out! Let me know what you like the best,” I wrote. “I will move the alternates into the treasury before it expires so all have a chance to be seen.”

It wasn’t long before I saw the IM flashing. Sally was back. “I’m in awe,” she wrote. “I can’t choose a favorite….I like them all!”

“Me, too,” I replied. “So much that I’m going to put the the active photos and the alternates here as well…..never know how many folks might see them here on the blog! Also, the treasury will expire on Wednesday, and so the photos will be here well after that!”
